Diagnostics before laser
Pentacam: the device that can say “no”
Laser removes part of the cornea. So before laser you need to know whether you have enough of it. Oculus Pentacam uses a rotating camera to capture the whole cornea and build a map of its thickness and shape. It’s like checking the thickness of the ice before stepping onto it — you can’t judge it by eye.

A new lens is put in once and for a long time. So its power is calculated from precise measurements of your eye, not from a table. A millimetre’s error in eye length — and you’ll need glasses again after surgery. Like a suit: an “about right” size goes on, but it doesn’t fit.

Which laser is used for ReLEx SMILE at RB CLINIC?
On the ZEISS VisuMax femtosecond laser. The correction itself takes 25 seconds and no corneal flap is needed: the laser shapes the lens inside the cornea, and the surgeon removes it through a small incision. ReLEx SMILE now costs 350,000 ₸ per eye at the special price; the list price is 400,000 ₸ per eye.
Why does the clinic need two lasers for vision correction?
So that the method is chosen for your eye. VisuMax is needed for ReLEx SMILE and for the first stage of Femto-LASIK; the excimer MEL 90 — for Femto-LASIK and PRK. SMILE doesn’t correct long-sightedness, while Femto-LASIK and PRK do. Both lasers are ZEISS and work as a pair.
Can diagnostics show that laser isn’t safe for me?
Yes, that’s what it’s for. Pentacam builds a map of corneal thickness and shape. If the cornea is thin or there are signs of keratoconus, the surgeon will tell you straight and suggest what can be done. Diagnostics before laser correction costs 22,000 ₸ per visit, Pentacam included.
How is the lens calculated for cataract?
From measurements of your eye: the Topcon ALADDIN biometer measures eye length and corneal curvature, and Pentacam adds a corneal map. The clinic also has a second biometer, the Alcon ARGOS, which shows the astigmatism axis on an image of the eye. Cataract diagnostics with lens calculation costs 40,000 ₸ per visit.
Does measuring eye pressure hurt?
No. The Huvitz non-contact tonometer measures pressure with a short puff of air: the device doesn’t touch the eye and no drops are needed. Unpleasant for exactly one second.
After lens replacement everything looks foggy again. What should I do?
Most often a thin membrane behind the new lens has turned cloudy. It’s cleared with the beam of the ZEISS VISULAS YAG III laser, without an incision. If your cataract surgery was at RB CLINIC, this is free within the first three months.
Do you have a retinal laser?
Yes, two: the LIGHTLas 577 and the ZEISS Visulas 532s. They strengthen the retina in diabetes, thinning and tears. Retinal laser photocoagulation costs from 50,000 ₸ per eye, per stage; the doctor checks the retina on the ZEISS CIRRUS OCT.
Can I have just one test, without a full appointment?
Yes. A Pentacam scan is 9,000 ₸ for both eyes, OCT is from 10,000 ₸ for both eyes, and computer perimetry is 5,000 ₸ per test. But only a doctor can explain the result and tell you what to do — which is why most people choose a full appointment.
