  1. Day 0 · Surgery day. The ZEISS MEL 90 laser works on the surface of the cornea. No general anaesthesia, you’re awake, and a lid speculum holds the eyelid — you physically can’t blink. At the end the surgeon puts in a protective lens: like a plaster, only for the eye.
  2. Days 1–3 · The hard days. 2–3 days of a gritty feeling, watering and light sensitivity. We tell you in advance so it doesn’t come as news on day two.
  3. Day 4 · It eases off. Things become comfortable. Back to work — on day 3–4.
  4. Day 5 · The lens comes out. On day five the protective lens is removed, and from then on your vision improves quickly.
  5. 3–4 weeks · You see. The final result comes in three to four weeks. Follow-up checks for three months after surgery are free.

I want to say a huge thank you to Dr. Sagat Serikovich for my vision correction. From the very first visit you feel real professionalism, confidence and calm — it really helped me cope with my nerves before the procedure. Everything was explained in detail, without rushing, and at every stage I understood what was happening. The correction itself was quick and comfortable, and the result exceeded all my expectations — my vision became sharp, as if a new world had opened up. Thank you for the attentive care, the support and an excellent result.

Not instead, but on purpose

Why people choose PRK on purpose: a thin cornea, sport, risk of a blow

PRK isn’t a cut-down version of other methods but a tool in its own right. It has one property people choose it for deliberately: no flap is left on the cornea. For some eyes that’s just a detail; for others it’s the main argument.

No flap — so nothing can shift

PRK makes no flap: the laser works on the surface of the cornea, and the thin top layer — the epithelium — grows back on its own. No incision and no cut line is left on the cornea.

That’s why it’s chosen for boxing, wrestling and jobs with a risk of a blow to the eye

Where a hit to the face is possible, having no flap is an advantage, not a saving. For an athlete, what matters isn’t how many days recovery takes but what happens to the eye a year later in the ring.

And that’s why it’s chosen when the cornea is on the thin side

PRK doesn’t use up corneal thickness on a flap. If another doctor told you “we won’t make a flap”, that’s not yet a no to correction. Whether PRK suits you is decided not by the minus but by the Pentacam scan at diagnostics.

If you’re looking at PRK simply because it costs less, that’s a perfectly good choice too. The result is the same. The difference isn’t in the quality of vision but in how many days you’ll feel uncomfortable.

Three laser correction methods: what you pay extra for

The price difference buys you days, not vision. The quality of the result is the same with all three methods; what differs is how many days you’ll be uncomfortable and when you get back to work.

No surprises

Surgery day and the first three days at home

There’s no need to fear the surgery itself — it’s the days after that can be hard, and we say so plainly. Once you know that grittiness on day two is normal and not a complication, it’s much easier to get through.

Walk through the clinic — 8 rooms in a minuteStarting with the laser room
  1. Arrival and checkThe contract and consent form, then the doctor rechecks all your eye measurements before the laser.
  2. SurgeryNo general anaesthesia, you’re awake. The ZEISS MEL 90 excimer laser works on the corneal surface, and at the end the surgeon puts in a protective lens.
  3. HomeA check after surgery and discharge. No drips and no overnight stay: you spend the hard days at home.

Does the surgery itself hurt

Here is the surgeon’s honest answer: you’ll feel cool liquid on the eye and the doctor’s touch, but not on the eye itself. The bright light will feel uncomfortable: you’re simply not used to it. No general anaesthesia, you’re awake, and a lid speculum holds the eyelid — you physically can’t blink, even if you want to.

What happens on the hard days

2–3 days of a gritty feeling, watering and light sensitivity. By day 4 it gets comfortable. These days are easier spent at home: dark glasses, dim light and less phone screen — your eyes need rest right now.

You’re not left to deal with this alone

Follow-up checks for three months after surgery are free. On day five we remove the protective lens, and from then on your vision improves quickly. If anything worries you, call: +7 771 848 00 00 or +7 702 747 11 77.

Honestly, up front

When PRK isn’t suitable

If PRK isn’t right for you, we’ll say so at diagnostics — and tell you what is. Almost every “no” has a bridge: another method or another operation at this same clinic.

PRK — yes

  • Myopia up to −6.0 D or hyperopia up to +3.0 D
  • Astigmatism up to ±3.0
  • Age 18 to 45; the surgeon decides exceptions based on your eye
  • A cornea thinner than a flap needs — if the Pentacam scan allows
  • Contact sport or a job with a possible blow to the eye

Contraindications in brief

Laser correction isn’t done with keratoconus, a cornea too thin for a large minus, progressive myopia, diabetes or acute eye inflammation.

Possible, but later

With marked corneal dryness — after treatment. With eye inflammation — after full recovery. After systemic retinoids — 6 months or more after the course ends.

First step

Start with diagnostics

About two hours, and you leave with an answer: whether PRK can treat your eye and, if not, which method will. Keratoconus and corneal thinning show up only on the Pentacam topographer, so nobody rushes here.

  1. Refractometry and visual acuity
  2. Eye pressure
  3. Corneal topography on Pentacam
  4. Slit-lamp examination
  5. Dilated fundus exam
  6. A talk with the surgeon

What pre-correction diagnostics include

For those who like to understand

How PRK is done: three steps in plain words

The whole of PRK laser correction is three steps, and none of them needs an incision. If your doctor has already explained it all, feel free to scroll on: it doesn’t affect the decision.

PRK at RB CLINIC from the surgeon’s side: the eye under the laser, a lid speculum holding the eyelid
No flap — nothing to shift
  1. The thin top layer — the epithelium — is removed. It’s a film just a few cells thick that grows back within a few days, like new skin over a scrape.
  2. The ZEISS MEL 90 excimer laser reshapes the cornea from the surface — to match your minus or plus. The laser follows the calculation made at diagnostics; the lid speculum won’t let you blink.
  3. A protective lens goes in — the epithelium heals on its own. The lens comes out on day five, and from then on your vision improves quickly. The final result comes in three to four weeks.

PRK laser correction glossary

Cornea
The clear window in front of the pupil. This is what the laser reshapes.
Epithelium
The film on that window, like new skin over a scrape: it comes off and grows back by itself.
Dioptres (D)
What’s written on your glasses prescription: minus means myopia, plus means hyperopia. What’s done before 18.
Astigmatism
The window isn’t round but slightly oval, so the picture looks stretched. More about astigmatism.
Protective lens
A soft “plaster” lens for the healing period. It comes out on day five.
PRK
Photorefractive keratectomy, PRK for short: the name is long, but the substance is in the three steps above.

Questions

Questions about PRK laser correction

How much does PRK cost in Astana?

Until 31 October — a special price of 100,000 ₸ per eye and 200,000 ₸ for both, with any of the four surgeons. Per the price list of 10.05.2026, PRK costs 175,000 ₸ per eye. Diagnostics are needed before surgery: 22,000 ₸ per visit, a repeat visit — 12,000 ₸ per visit. Follow-up checks for three months after surgery are free.

Does it hurt after PRK?

Honestly: 2–3 days will be unpleasant — a gritty feeling, watering, light sensitivity. By day 4 it gets comfortable, and on day five the protective lens comes out. There’s no general anaesthesia for the surgery itself: you’ll feel cool liquid and the doctor’s touch, but not on the eye itself, and an unusually bright light. We warn you in advance so the hard days don’t take you by surprise.

When can I go back to work after PRK?

On day 3–4. For the first days the eye has a protective lens, and it’s easier to spend them at home. The lens comes out on day five; final vision comes in three to four weeks. If you need to be back at work the next day, ask the surgeon about Femto-LASIK or ReLEx SMILE.

How is PRK different from ReLEx SMILE and Femto-LASIK?

In PRK the laser works on the corneal surface and there’s no flap. So recovery is longer: back to work on day 3–4 rather than the next day. The final quality of vision is the same with all three methods; what differs is recovery time, range and price. At the special price: PRK — 100,000 ₸, Femto-LASIK — 250,000 ₸, ReLEx SMILE — 350,000 ₸ per eye. All three methods are on the laser vision correction page.

Are PRK and “FRK” the same thing?

Yes. “FRK” is the Russian abbreviation; in Latin letters the same method is written differently. If you searched for laser correction under its English name, you’re in the right place: here are the price, recovery times and surgeons for this exact method.

Will PRK work if I’ve been told my cornea is thin?

Often yes: PRK doesn’t use up corneal thickness on a flap, so it’s chosen when there isn’t enough cornea for other methods. But it’s decided not by the minus or someone else’s report but by the Pentacam scan at our diagnostics. With keratoconus laser correction isn’t done — cross-linking is needed.

Can I have PRK if I do boxing or wrestling?

PRK is often chosen precisely by athletes who take hits to the face: no flap is left on the cornea to shift. When you can return to training, the surgeon will tell you for your case at diagnostics and follow-up checks.
