Laser treatment means the doctor works inside the eye with a beam of light, not an instrument. The beam passes through the pupil and lands exactly where the problem is: the cloudy film behind the lens, the iris, the vitreous or the retina. Nobody touches the eye from outside — like a torch shining through a window onto the far wall without touching the glass.

An acute attack is a condition in which sight can be lost within a couple of hours, for good. Warning signs: age 38 or over, worsening near vision, headaches — most often at the temple, the back of the head or above the eyebrows. The laser makes a tiny opening in the iris, and the fluid inside the eye drains freely again.

Can I go to work straight after laser?

Yes. After laser for secondary cataract, iridotomy, vitreolysis and micropulse laser there are no restrictions; after retinal laser photocoagulation you can also go to work. One rule: on the day of the procedure, don’t drive until the pupil-dilating drops wear off.

Is it true that laser for secondary cataract can be free?

Yes, if your cataract surgery was done at RB CLINIC: for the first 3 months after surgery the laser is free, after 6 months — 40,000 ₸ per eye. If you had surgery elsewhere — 80,000 ₸ per eye.

How do I know if I need laser iridotomy?

Be alert if you are over 38, your near vision is getting worse and you’ve started having headaches — at the temple, the back of the head, above the eyebrows. Floaters — do they always need laser?

No. Laser clears vitreous opacities if they get in the way, and at the appointment the doctor will tell you whether vitreolysis suits you. But if floaters appear suddenly, with flashes or a curtain at the side, come in the same day: this happens with a retinal tear.
