Why glaucoma is called the silent thief of sight
Glaucoma doesn’t hurt and doesn’t blur the picture in the centre. It quietly takes the edges — and nobody checks their edges. High eye pressure presses on the optic nerve for years, and it loses fibres one by one. Like blood pressure: you won’t know until you measure it.

The centre stays sharp
Letters on the chart, the face of the person you’re talking to, your phone screen — that’s all central vision. Glaucoma starts at the edges, so “100%” vision says nothing about glaucoma.

The other eye covers for the first
Where one eye no longer sees, the other does, and the brain stitches the picture together. The loss is noticed only once it’s in both eyes.

What’s lost doesn’t come back
No drop, laser or surgery can restore dead optic nerve fibres. Treatment stops the loss — and keeps exactly what you have on the day it starts.
There is one exception — an acute attack. With angle-closure glaucoma, eye pressure can shoot up within hours: severe eye pain, a red eye, haze, nausea. That means seeing an ophthalmologist the same day, not waiting until morning.

Glaucoma isn’t diagnosed from a single pressure reading. It’s diagnosed when three things line up: eye pressure, visual field and a scan of the optic nerve. That’s why the package includes everything at once — no going from room to room on different days, no paying extra for each machine.

How much does glaucoma treatment cost in Astana?

What are the early symptoms of glaucoma?
Most often, none. Open-angle glaucoma doesn’t hurt for years and doesn’t blur central vision; it takes the edges of the visual field. Sometimes people notice rainbow halos around lights, eyes that tire quickly, or trouble seeing in the dark. Angle-closure glaucoma can cause an acute attack: severe pain in the eye and head, a red eye, haze, nausea — a reason to see an ophthalmologist the same day.
Can glaucoma be cured completely?
No, but it can be stopped. Glaucoma treatment lowers eye pressure and keeps the optic nerve from losing more fibres. Do I have to have surgery?
No. Treatment starts with drops; if they’re not enough, laser is added, and only if the pressure still won’t stay down is surgery done. Surgery is usually offered at an advanced stage. The doctor will tell you which step you need based on your diagnostic results.
Does glaucoma laser treatment hurt?
Glaucoma laser treatment is done under numbing drops, with no incision, as an outpatient — you go home the same day. Afterwards the doctor will prescribe drops and check your pressure at a follow-up visit.

Can I drive after diagnostics?
Better not: to examine the drainage angle and the back of the eye, the pupil is dilated with drops, and for a while everything is blurry and light is dazzling. Come by taxi or with someone who can drive, and bring sunglasses.
