This isn’t a diagnosis: a phone screen can’t replace the chart at the clinic. There you have 5 metres, even lighting and each eye tested separately.
Visus, OD, OS — in plain words
Visual acuity is how small a detail your eye can make out from a distance. The test measures it in each eye separately. Normal is 1.0: from five metres you read the tenth line of the chart. Think of a camera lens: at 1.0 the photo is sharp, at 0.5 small print is already blurred.
In the doctor’s notes, acuity is written separately: OD — right eye, OS — left. That’s why one eye is covered during the test. With both eyes open, the stronger eye hides the weaker one, and people go for years without knowing one eye sees worse.
The first number is recorded without correction, the second with lenses. If acuity improves with lenses — it’s the eye’s optics, and glasses, contact lenses or laser can fix that. If it doesn’t — the cause is looked for in the eye itself.
Some people see better than normal. It’s an individual trait, not a reason for pride or worry. What matters more is how your number changes from year to year. If it drops by a couple of lines — that’s your reason to come in.
Honestly, before you book
The chart checks sharpness in the centre. Eye diseases often start somewhere else. Glaucoma, for example, leaves central vision alone for a long time: first it eats away at the edges of the visual field, while the person still reads the tenth line with ease. It’s like checking a car by how brightly the headlights shine: the lights are fine, but you’ve learned nothing about the brakes.
You can’t feel it or see it on a chart. At the full eye exam, pressure is measured by a device without touching the eye — with a puff of air.
The doctor examines the retina and optic nerve through a dilated pupil. Letters won’t tell you anything here.
The chart is straight in front of you. What happens at the sides is checked with another test — perimetry.

You sit and read letters — that’s all you need to do. Pupils aren’t dilated, so you can drive straight after the test. Adults and schoolchildren manage it equally well.

If the number is below normal, lenses are placed in front of your eye. If it goes up — glasses, contact lenses or laser can correct your vision. If not — that’s a reason for a full eye exam.
