You come with a complaint and leave with an answer. Not a single step is there just for show: each one is needed to understand what’s going on with the eye. And none involves injections or incisions. Allow some extra time for the visit: the pupil drops don’t work instantly.

  2. Microscope examA slit lamp is a microscope with a narrow beam of light. The doctor sees the cornea, the lens and the white of the eye layer by layer. You simply look straight ahead; the device doesn’t touch your eye.
  3. Drops for the pupilDrops widen the pupil so the doctor can look inside the eye. For a few hours close-up things are blurry and light is dazzling: don’t drive that day, and bring sunglasses.
  4. Back of the eyeThrough a Goldmann lens the doctor examines the retina, blood vessels and optic nerve right to the edge. This is how things a letter chart can’t show are found: a retinal tear, signs of diabetes, signs of glaucoma.

Don’t put it off, or can it wait

When to see an ophthalmologist, and when to call straight away

Most eye complaints aren’t urgent, but a few are more urgent than toothache. Here’s how to tell them apart so you lose neither a day nor money. Early diagnosis is when an ophthalmologist finds a disease before you notice your vision getting worse.

Call an ophthalmologist straight away, don’t wait for an appointment

  • A sudden shadow or curtain in front of the eye
  • Flashes of light and lots of new floaters at once
  • An eye injury or a chemical splash
  • Severe pain with redness, vision suddenly dropped

The clinic is open Mon–Sat 9:00–19:00. At night or on Sunday, if your vision suddenly gets worse, don’t wait until morning — call an ambulance on 103.

Your report will have unfamiliar words — behind them are simple things. Keep this glossary handy, and ask the doctor about anything unclear right at the visit.

Biomicroscopy
An eye exam with a slit lamp — a microscope with a narrow beam. The doctor sees the cornea, the lens and the front of the eye in layers, like a slice of cake.
Ophthalmoscopy, back of the eye
An exam of the back wall of the eye: the retina, blood vessels and optic nerve. Here blood vessels can be seen without any incision, which is why diabetes and high blood pressure are spotted in the back of the eye.
Mydriasis
A pupil widened by drops. Like opening a window wider to see the whole room. It wears off on its own after a few hours.
Goldmann lens
A special lens that lets the doctor see the retina right to its edge, not just the centre. The edges are where tears most often hide.
Visual acuity test
A visual acuity check with a letter chart. It answers “how well do you see”, but not “why” — for that you need an ophthalmologist’s exam and eye diagnostics.
OCT
Optical coherence tomography: a cross-section scan of the retina and nerve, layer by layer. Like an ultrasound, only with light and more precise. An ophthalmologist orders it if the exam shows a need to look deeper.
Perimetry
A visual field test: you look at a point and press a button when a light blinks at the side. This kind of test picks up glaucoma while you still notice nothing yourself.

Which drops are used at the visit, and can I drive afterwards?

To examine the back of the eye, drops that widen the pupil are used. They last a few hours: close-up things are blurry and light is dazzling. Don’t drive that day, and bring sunglasses. For some tests numbing drops are used — they work for about 15–20 minutes.

Can I wear eye make-up to the consultation?

Come without mascara, eyeliner or eyeshadow. Make-up particles get in the way of examining the cornea and the back of the eye and can distort the result, especially if the doctor is going to dilate your pupils.

How is an ophthalmologist consultation different from eye diagnostics?

An ophthalmologist consultation is a doctor and an exam for your complaint, from 7,000 ₸ per visit. Full eye diagnostics adds device tests: visual acuity, eye pressure, glasses prescription, 20,000 ₸ per visit. If you have no complaints and want everything checked, choose full diagnostics.
