I want to say a huge thank you to Dr. Sagat Serikovich for my vision correction. From the very first visit you feel real professionalism, confidence and calm — it really helped me cope with my nerves before the procedure. Everything was explained in detail, without rushing, and at every stage I understood what was happening. The correction itself was quick and comfortable, and the result exceeded all my expectations — my vision became sharp, as if a new world had opened up. Thank you for the attentive care, the support and an excellent result.

The main fear — honestly

Is the flap dangerous?

The word “flap” sounds scary until you know what it means. It is a thin top layer of the cornea that is lifted during surgery so the second laser can reach the right layer, and then laid straight back in place. Here is what really happens to it.

1

The flap is cut by a laser, not a blade

Femto- means femtosecond: VisuMax creates the flap with pulses along a set line. There is no mechanical microkeratome blade in this method — think laser cutting instead of scissors.

2

The second laser works while the flap is open

MEL 90 removes microns from the exposed layer and reshapes the cornea to your minus or plus — all in one visit. The flap is folded back like a page of a book and laid back in place.

3

You’re not left to deal with this alone

Follow-up checks for three months after surgery are free. If anything feels odd, you don’t guess at home — you come back to the surgeon.

You’re comparing it with the wrong thing

The LASIK you heard about ten years ago was done with a mechanical blade. Here the flap is made by a femtosecond laser, and the microns are removed by a second laser. It’s a different operation.

We don’t promise there are never complications: no one can promise that. We tell you what we do, what we do it with and what happens afterwards.

Surgery day

How surgery day and the first 24 hours go

One operation, one visit, and back to work the next day. No general anaesthesia: you’re awake, you hear the surgeon and know what’s happening at every step. The hardest part isn’t the surgery itself — it’s making up your mind.

Walk through the clinic — 8 rooms in a minuteStarting with the laser room
  1. Before surgery

    Diagnostics

The Pentacam corneal scan shows the thickness and shape of the cornea. From it the surgeon tells you whether Femto-LASIK can treat your eye or another method suits you better.

  2. Surgery

    Two lasers in one visit

VisuMax makes the flap, MEL 90 removes the microns, the flap goes back in place. All in one operating room, in the same visit.

  3. The next day

    Back to work

By the next day you see clearly and go back to work. Follow-up checks for three months are free.

What you’ll feel during the surgery itself

We ask about this separately, because this is exactly what people fear. Here is the surgeon’s honest answer: you’ll feel cool liquid on the eye and the doctor’s touch, but not on the eye itself. The bright light will feel uncomfortable: you’re simply not used to it.

What if I blink or flinch?

You can’t. A lid speculum holds the eyelid open: you physically can’t close the eye, even if you want to. That is the answer to the biggest fear. Two people are beside you the whole time, the surgeon and the theatre nurse; you’re awake and hear every word.

Does laser vision correction hurt?

Not during the operation: drops numb the eye, and you don’t feel the laser itself. What you do feel: cool liquid on the eye, the doctor’s touch near the eye and a bright light you’re simply not used to.

Honestly, before you book

When Femto-LASIK isn’t suitable

Better to know now than after the trip to the clinic. Femto-LASIK has the widest range of the three methods, but it has limits too. If your eye is beyond them, it’s not a dead end: there is almost always a neighbouring method.

Femto-LASIK — yes

  • myopia up to −12.0 D — including where ReLEx SMILE no longer works (beyond −10.0);
  • hyperopia up to +4.0 D;
  • astigmatism up to ±3.0;
  • age 18 to 45, exceptions — at the doctor’s discretion;
  • a cornea thick enough for a flap — Pentacam will show this.

Femto-LASIK — no

Postpone, not refuse: with marked dry eye, until inflammation is treated, and after systemic retinoids — wait 6 months.

First step

Start with diagnostics

The surgeon scans your cornea on Pentacam, checks your vision and tells you straight: whether Femto-LASIK can treat you or your method is a different one. The decision is yours — with the numbers in hand.

  1. Visual acuity and refraction
  2. Pentacam corneal scan
  3. Corneal thickness and shape
  4. A talk with the surgeon

How Femto-LASIK works

This section is for those who like to understand what will be done to them. In short: Femto-LASIK reshapes the cornea, the clear “window” of the eye, so light focuses precisely on the retina again. Glasses did this from the outside; laser correction does the same inside the cornea, once.

Femto-LASIK diagram: cross-section of the cornea, the flap and the layer the second laser removes microns from 1 2 3
  1. The flap is made by a femtosecond laser. VisuMax places pulses along a set line inside the cornea — creating a thin flap that stays attached by a hinge.
  2. The microns are removed by a second laser. The MEL 90 excimer laser works on the exposed layer: it removes exactly as much as your minus, plus and astigmatism require.
  3. The flap goes back in place in the same visit. It lies back down like a page of a book and protects the treated layer.

That’s why Femto-LASIK has the widest range of the three methods: two lasers work as a pair, and the second one has access to the whole layer it needs. ReLEx SMILE has no flap, but it doesn’t correct plus either. PRK does without a flap in a different way — it removes the top layer, so recovery takes longer. Which method to choose depends not on the minus itself but on the thickness and shape of your cornea.

Femto-LASIK in plain words: two lasers in one visit

Femto-LASIK
laser vision correction with two lasers: the femtosecond laser makes the flap, the excimer laser removes microns. Femto-LASIK is pronounced “femto-LASIK”; people also search for “femtolasik” — it’s the same operation.
Cornea
the clear front layer of the eye, like the glass on a watch. Laser correction changes its shape.
Flap
a thin top layer of the cornea that is lifted during surgery and laid back in place in the same visit.
Femtosecond laser
a laser with ultra-short pulses. Ours is the Carl Zeiss VisuMax: it makes the flap instead of a blade.
Excimer laser
a laser that removes microns of the cornea and changes its shape. Ours is the ZEISS MEL 90, which works in tandem with VisuMax.
Dioptre, D
the unit in your prescription. Minus means myopia, plus means hyperopia. Femto-LASIK treats from −12.0 to +4.0 D.
Myopia
distance vision is blurry, a minus in the prescription. More about myopia.
Hyperopia
close-up vision is difficult, a plus in the prescription. Femto-LASIK treats it up to +4.0 D, while ReLEx SMILE doesn’t correct plus.
Astigmatism
the cornea is unevenly curved, so the picture blurs or doubles. Femto-LASIK treats it up to ±3.0. More about astigmatism.
Pentacam
a device that scans the cornea and measures its thickness and shape. The surgeon chooses the method from this scan.

Questions

Questions about Femto-LASIK laser correction

How much does Femto-LASIK cost in Astana?

The clinic books at the special price: 250,000 ₸ per eye, 500,000 ₸ for both eyes. The list price is 300,000 ₸ per eye and 600,000 ₸ for both eyes. The special price is the same with all four surgeons and covers the work of both lasers. Follow-up checks for three months after surgery are free. Pre-correction diagnostics are paid separately — 22,000 ₸ per visit.

How is “femtolasik” different from regular LASIK?

In how the flap is made. In classic LASIK it was cut with a mechanical blade — a microkeratome. In Femto-LASIK the flap is created by the VisuMax femtosecond laser with pulses along a set line, and the microns are removed by a second laser, the MEL 90 excimer. There is no blade in this method.

Does Femto-LASIK hurt?

Not during the operation: drops numb the eye, and you don’t feel the laser itself. What you do feel: cool liquid on the eye, the doctor’s touch near the eye and a bright light you’re simply not used to. No general anaesthesia — you’re awake.

When will I see well after Femto-LASIK?

On the day — haze, a gritty feeling and tears, which is normal. By the next day you see clearly and can go back to work.

Who is Femto-LASIK for?

People with myopia up to −12.0 D or hyperopia up to +4.0 D and astigmatism up to ±3.0, aged 18 to 45 (exceptions — at the doctor’s discretion). The surgeon makes the final call from the Pentacam corneal scan at diagnostics: corneal thickness and shape matter.

How is Femto-LASIK different from ReLEx SMILE?

ReLEx SMILE has no flap; it treats minus from −0.5 to −10.0 D and astigmatism up to ±5.0, and its special price is 350,000 ₸ per eye. Femto-LASIK covers more: minus up to −12.0 and plus up to +4.0 D, and its special price is 250,000 ₸ per eye. These are different operations, not “expensive and cheap”: the surgeon will tell you which is yours from the corneal scan.

What happens after surgery — will I be left on my own?

No. Follow-up checks for three months after surgery are free: if anything feels odd, you come back to the surgeon instead of guessing at home. How long the restrictions last — when you can rub your eyes, swim or use a sauna — the surgeon will tell you for your case.
