Laser photocoagulation of the retina in Astana

The laser doesn’t cut the eye: it places spots around the weak area, and they hold the retina like a weld seam.

What you were told at the exam

Ring around the tear: 11 of 14

The spots form a ring around the tear. As they heal, they bond the retina to the tissue beneath it — the edge of the tear won’t spread any further.

What is retinal laser photocoagulation

Retinal laser photocoagulation is a spot “weld” of a thin area from inside the eye, with no incision. The retina is a thin film on the back wall of the eye, like wallpaper on a wall. Where it has thinned or torn, the “wallpaper” can start to peel away. The laser places a row of tiny spots around that area; they heal into scars and hold the retina the way small tacks hold the edge of wallpaper.

1

The beam goes through the pupil — the eye isn’t touched from outside

No incision, no stitches, no patch. The doctor directs the laser through the dilated pupil and a special lens, like light through a window.

2

Spots go only where it’s weak

Around a tear, along thinning at the edge, across the periphery with diabetes. The centre — what you read and recognise faces with — is left alone for tears and degeneration.

3

The seal takes about a month to strengthen

Right after the session the spots are only starting to heal. They fully mature in about a month — then the doctor checks the back of the eye again and tells you whether it’s holding.

Honestly: the laser doesn’t bring back what’s already lost. It stops things getting worse. A tear that’s ringed in time doesn’t turn into a retinal detachment — and that would mean full surgery. That’s why laser isn’t put off.
What it costs in your case

Does it hurt

How retinal laser photocoagulation goes, and whether it hurts

You sit as at a normal lamp exam and see bright flashes. There’s no need to lie down, be put to sleep or stay in the clinic. The eye is numbed with drops, so usually you only feel the light. When there are many spots, as with diabetes, it can be uncomfortable — which is why treatment is split into stages.

  1. Drops dilate the pupilThrough the wide pupil the doctor sees the edges of the retina — that’s where the spots will go. The drops take a while to work, so for part of the visit you simply wait.
  2. Numbing drops and a lensThe eye is numbed and a contact lens with gel is placed on it. It holds the eyelids and focuses the beam — blinking is nothing to worry about.
  3. Flashes of lightLook where the doctor asks. Each spot is a short flash, like a camera’s. The session takes less than an hour.
  4. Home the same dayFor the first few hours everything is bright and blurry from the drops — don’t drive, and bring sunglasses and someone to go with you.

How much retinal laser photocoagulation costs in Astana

The cost of retinal laser photocoagulation depends on what was found at the exam and how many spots are needed. A tear or thinning is strengthened in one go. A large area, as with diabetes, is split into stages, and you pay for each stage separately — not the whole sum up front.

Retinal tear

A ring of spots around the tear

Flashes, “floaters”, a curtain at the side — and the exam found a tear.

70,000 ₸per eye

In the price list: focal or sectoral retinal laser photocoagulation. Spots are placed only around the tear.

Degeneration, before laser correction

Strengthen thinning at the edge

Lattice or thinning was found at the periphery, often with short-sightedness and before laser vision correction.

70,000 ₸per eye

In the price list: peripheral retinal laser photocoagulation (PLC). If the doctor splits it into stages — 60,000 ₸ per eye, per stage.

Diabetes

Panretinal, in stages

Diabetic retinopathy: spots cover the whole periphery, the centre is left alone.

50,000 ₸per eye, per stage

In the price list: one stage of panretinal laser photocoagulation for diabetic retinopathy. The doctor will tell you how many stages you need after the exam.

How many visits

How many sessions you need and when the check-up is

A tear or thinning is usually strengthened in one visit. Diabetes — in several, with breaks. The break isn’t for the clinic, it’s for the eye: the load is spread more evenly and treatment is easier to bear.

  2. 2First laser sessionless than an hour, home the same day.
  3. 3A 1–2 week breakif there are several stages; for panretinal treatment there are usually 2 to 4.
  4. 4Next stageseach is paid separately, at the price per eye, per stage.
  5. 5Check-up in about a monththe spots have matured — the doctor checks whether the seal is holding and whether top-up spots are needed.

After the laser

What to avoid after retinal laser photocoagulation

The limits are short-lived, and almost all are about not disturbing the retina while the seal matures. In the first week the main thing is to avoid heavy lifting and saunas.

On the day of the procedure

Don’t drive: the pupil is still wide and light is dazzling. Sunglasses and someone to go with you — and the way home will be easy.

First 5–7 days

No lifting over 3–5 kg, no sport, steam room, sauna, pool or hot bath. Don’t bend down sharply, and avoid alcohol.

2–3 weeks

Screens — with breaks, in the sun — with sunglasses. Better to postpone flights and mountains; contact lenses — only once the doctor allows.

The whole month

Don’t rub your eyes. If flashes, “floaters” or a curtain at the side come back — don’t wait for the check-up, call straight away: +7 771 848 00 00.

The clinic is open Mon–Sat 9:00–19:00. At night or on Sunday, if your vision suddenly gets worse, don’t wait until morning — call an ambulance on 103.

Laser vision correction after retinal laser — yes, it’s possible. Usually no sooner than 6–12 months after the last session, once the doctor confirms the spots have matured. Laser vision correction

Questions

Questions about retinal laser photocoagulation

Does retinal laser photocoagulation hurt?

Usually not: the eye is numbed with drops, and you mostly feel bright flashes of light. When there are many spots, as with diabetes, it can be uncomfortable — which is why a large area is split into stages. The session takes less than an hour, and you sit at the device as at a normal exam.

How much does retinal laser photocoagulation cost?

From the clinic price list: from 50,000 ₸ per eye, per stage. A retinal tear (focal or sectoral laser photocoagulation) and strengthening thinning at the edge (peripheral laser photocoagulation) — 70,000 ₸ per eye; a stage of peripheral treatment — 60,000 ₸ per eye, per stage. For diabetes — 50,000 ₸ per eye, per stage. Laser to the macula — 70,000 ₸ per eye, SMILV micropulse — 80,000 ₸ per eye. A back-of-the-eye exam before the laser — 10,000 ₸ per visit.

What is peripheral laser photocoagulation of the retina?

It strengthens the retina along its edge: spots are placed around thinned areas and “lattice” before a tear appears there. It is often prescribed for short-sightedness and before laser vision correction. In the price list, peripheral laser photocoagulation is 70,000 ₸ per eye; if the doctor splits it into stages — 60,000 ₸ per eye, per stage.

How many sessions will I need?

A tear or thinning at the edge of the retina is usually strengthened in one go. With diabetes, spots are placed across the whole periphery and treatment is split into stages: usually 2 to 4 sessions, 1–2 weeks apart. The doctor gives the exact number of stages after the exam, and you pay for each stage separately.

How will I see after retinal laser photocoagulation?

For the first few hours everything is blurry and light is dazzling: that’s the drops that widened the pupil. Sometimes mild light sensitivity lasts a few days. After 1–2 weeks these sensations pass. If the spots were placed at the edge of the retina, the central vision you read with usually doesn’t change.

What should I avoid after retinal laser photocoagulation?

On the day of the procedure — driving. For the first 5–7 days — lifting more than 3–5 kg, sport, steam rooms, saunas and pools, bending down sharply, alcohol. For another 2–3 weeks — long stretches at a screen without breaks, flying and trips to the mountains. For the whole month, don’t rub your eyes.

How long does the retina take to heal after laser?

The scar spots fully mature in about a month. Then the doctor checks the back of the eye again to see whether the seal is holding and whether top-up spots are needed.

Can I have laser vision correction after retinal photocoagulation?

Yes. Usually no sooner than 6–12 months after the last laser session, once the ophthalmologist confirms the spots have matured and the retina is stable. Often it happens the other way round: thinning is found during the check-up before laser correction, and the retina is strengthened first.

What happens if I put off the laser?

The tear can widen and the retina — detach. Then laser is no longer enough and surgery is needed: vitrectomy costs 1,000,000 ₸ per eye. If the doctor said “you need laser”, book within the next few days, and with new flashes or a curtain over your eye, call straight away.
