Yes, astigmatism can be removed — but every eye has its own path, and not everyone needs surgery. Astigmatism is treated along one of four paths: glasses correct the picture, the laser reshapes the cornea, a toric lens corrects astigmatism together with cataract, and cross-linking stops keratoconus. Here’s what fits and what it costs — per the clinic’s price list.

After 45 and with cataract
If the lens is being replaced anyway, astigmatism can be removed in the same move. Instead of a standard artificial lens, a toric one is implanted — and astigmatism is corrected inside the eye, not by glasses. As if the glasses were built into the eye itself.

Important not to miss
In adults astigmatism usually stays put for years. If it’s growing, that’s a reason to check the cornea, not to change glasses. With keratoconus the cornea thins and bulges into a cone, and the astigmatism becomes irregular. Laser correction isn’t done with keratoconus — the cornea is strengthened first.
Keratoconus shows up on the Pentacam scan — a map of corneal thickness and shape. If it’s there, Dr. Zhukeyev performs cross-linking on the CF X-LINKER: the cornea is strengthened so the cone stops growing.

What eye diagnostics includeFor those who like to understand
Astigmatism isn’t a disease but a shape of the cornea. Normally the cornea is round like a football and focuses light into a single point. With astigmatism it’s stretched like a rugby ball: light bends more in one direction than the other, and the point on the retina smears into a line.
Treatment is chosen by the cause. Astigmatism can be congenital — then it often runs in families and stays with a person from childhood. It can also be acquired: after an injury or eye surgery, and with keratoconus, when the cornea changes shape and astigmatism grows.
Astigmatism usually comes together with myopia or hyperopia. That’s why a prescription for astigmatism has two power numbers: sphere is the minus or plus, cylinder is the astigmatism itself. The third number is the axis: the angle at which the cornea is stretched.
How astigmatism differs from myopia. With myopia, distance is blurry but near is fine. With astigmatism the picture is distorted at any distance: letters don’t just blur, they stretch to one side, like in a funhouse mirror. Squinting, which helps a little with minus, barely works here.

PRK and Femto-LASIK treat astigmatism up to ±3.0 dioptres, ReLEx SMILE up to ±5.0, but only with minus: SMILE doesn’t correct plus. If the astigmatism is stronger (with plus — over ±3.0), the laser can’t treat it — we’ll show you the options at diagnostics. No: the shape of the cornea doesn’t change with drops or exercises. Without surgery astigmatism is corrected with astigmatic glasses or contact lenses — convenient and safe, but it only works while you wear them. Glasses fitting at the clinic — 10,000 ₸ per fitting.
The quality of vision is the same with all three methods; they differ in astigmatism limit, recovery days and price. Up to ±3.0 all three work: PRK costs less but the first 2–3 days are uncomfortable; after Femto-LASIK and ReLEx SMILE you’re back at work the next day. From ±3.0 to ±5.0 with minus only ReLEx SMILE remains; with plus SMILE isn’t suitable.
