Which drug you’ve been prescribed
Eylea, Lucentis, Ozurdex: how the drugs differ
The doctor chooses the drug by the disease and the retinal scan, not by price. All three are given the same way — one injection in a few seconds. The difference is how the medicine works inside the eye and how long it lasts.
Ranibizumab
Lucentis
Suppresses abnormal blood vessels in the retina. Prescribed for diabetic macular oedema and retinal vein occlusion.
The aim is the same as with Eylea: stop the disease and preserve central vision.
Dexamethasone implant
Ozurdex
A tiny implant that releases medicine gradually over several months. It calms inflammation and macular swelling — including after cataract surgery.
A choice for those who find it hard to come to the clinic often.
Your doctor may prescribe a different drug — for example, Avastin (bevacizumab) or Kenalog (triamcinolone) for diabetic retinopathy and inflammation. The administrator will tell you the injection price with it and the price of the drug: choose “Other, not sure” in the calculator.
Why it’s needed
When eye injections are prescribed
An eye injection (intravitreal injection) treats the retina from the inside — where drops and tablets barely reach. The medicine goes straight into the eye, right next to the problem. Like watering the roots, not the leaves.

Wet age-related macular degeneration
The centre of the retina is affected: straight lines look wavy and a spot appears in the middle. Eylea or Lucentis injections slow the disease and help preserve vision.

Diabetic macular oedema and retinopathy
Over the years diabetes changes the blood vessels of the retina, and its centre swells. An injection reduces the swelling and helps you keep your sight — especially if treatment starts early.

Retinal vein occlusion
A retinal vein has become blocked and fluid collects around it. Injections reduce retinal swelling and improve circulation in the affected area.

Macular swelling after surgery or with inflammation
It can follow cataract removal or eye inflammation. Ozurdex is often chosen here: it calms the inflammation and reduces the swelling.

After the injection: what the first hours are like
Pain after the injection isn’t what you need to prepare for. Prepare for a few hours of blurry vision. Four things worth knowing in advance.
Blur and bubbles — that’s normal
In the first hours the picture is unclear and tiny air bubbles may float about. Vision usually returns fully within a few hours or the next day.
Home — but not behind the wheel
While the eye can’t see clearly, it’s best not to drive. Arrange for someone to take you, or call a taxi — to 12 Orynbor St and back.
The next injection — on your doctor’s schedule
A course is several injections with breaks in between. Your doctor will say when the next one is due from a retinal scan: it’s best not to skip it.

Does an eye injection hurt?
Before the injection the doctor puts numbing drops in the eye. They start working within a few minutes, and the eye stops feeling touch. Injecting the drug itself — Eylea, Lucentis or Ozurdex — takes a few seconds. Patients most often describe slight pressure or mild discomfort, but not pain. Many are surprised when the doctor says it’s already done.

How many injections does a course need?
The number of injections and the intervals between them are prescribed by the ophthalmologist based on the disease and an OCT scan of the retina. Will my vision get worse after an eye injection?

What’s the difference between Eylea, Lucentis and Ozurdex?
Eylea (aflibercept) and Lucentis (ranibizumab) suppress the growth of abnormal blood vessels in the retina and reduce swelling — they’re prescribed for wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema and retinal vein occlusion. Ozurdex is a dexamethasone implant: it releases medicine gradually over several months and calms inflammation and macular swelling. Your doctor decides which drug you need.
When is an eye injection unavoidable?
With the wet form of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular oedema, retinal vein occlusion and severe eye inflammation. Don’t delay treatment out of fear: things can get worse with every day.
Can both eyes be injected?
Yes, if the disease affects both eyes: the doctor decides on which day and in what order. Each injection in each eye is a separate injection on the price list. Choose “Both eyes” in the calculator and the total is calculated for both at once.
How should I prepare for an eye injection?
Before the injection, bring your doctor’s prescription with the name of the drug, previous discharge notes and OCT scans if you have them. Arrange for someone to take you home: in the first hours after the injection the eye can’t see clearly, so it’s best not to drive.
