For glasses — 3 steps out of 8. That’s usually where a free check at an optician ends.
Eye diagnostics at RB CLINIC (Astana, 12 Orynbor St.) cost 20,000 ₸ per visit: eye pressure, the fundus, lens fitting and a talk with the doctor in one visit. Before laser correction — 22,000 ₸ per visit; before cataract surgery and for glaucoma — 40,000 ₸ per visit. A follow-up visit costs 13,000 ₸ per visit.
Why pay when an optician checks for free
An optician checks which glasses will suit you. Eye diagnostics finds out why your vision changed and whether the eye is healthy. It’s the difference between a tyre shop that pumps up your tyre and a mechanic who finds out why it keeps going flat. Glasses fix sharpness, but they won’t tell you what’s happening with your eye pressure, retina and optic nerve.
Autorefraction, visual acuity and a glasses prescription are available at a good optician too. The other five — eye pressure, the drainage angle, the back of the eye, the slit lamp and the talk with the doctor — are why people see an ophthalmologist.
The back of the eye and the drainage angle can only be seen with a dilated pupil, and the drops take a while to work. Before laser correction, diagnostics takes two hours: six stages and a corneal scan — because it can’t be redone after surgery.
The doctor’s consultation is part of the visit — it’s a line in the price list, not a bonus. You’re told what the devices showed and what to do about it.

The price depends not on the doctor, but on why you’re coming. Every package has the same core — the eight steps of a full exam. Before your visit
There’s hardly anything to prepare — just don’t drive afterwards. Four things that make the visit calmer and more accurate.
Come by taxi or with someone who can drive. Bring sunglasses: after the drops, daylight will be dazzling.
A lens changes the shape of the cornea, and the device readings won’t be accurate. How many days before, the administrator will tell you when you book: before laser correction the timing is different.
Past prescriptions, reports, the names of any drops you use. The doctor will compare and see how your vision has changed.
Before laser correction — two hours. For other packages, the administrator will tell you the time when you book.
Honestly, before you book
The visit price covers every step of it. There are no extra charges during the visit. If the doctor needs to look deeper, a test is booked for another day — and you already know its price.
If you only need your visual acuity, there is a visual acuity test — a letter-chart check, 1,500 ₸ per test. But a single letter chart won’t tell you what a full exam will about your eye.

A full eye exam is 20,000 ₸ per visit, a follow-up is 13,000 ₸ per visit. Before laser correction and for keratoconus — 22,000 ₸ per visit; for cataract and glaucoma — 40,000 ₸ per visit. It is an important part, but without a dilated pupil and a doctor it won’t show the back of the eye.
